Job Shadowing Program

The Salem City School Division realizes the importance of helping young people make informed decisions about their future.  One of the most important decisions a young person can make is their choice to pursue a specific career.  Historically, schools have provided opportunities to learn more about what students like and what they are good at through a variety of interest inventories and aptitude tests.   Unfortunately opportunities for students to get a first-hand look at the day-to-day characteristics of a variety of careers available in numerous career fields have been limited.
In order to provide students with greater understanding of the true nature of various careers and career fields, the Salem City School Division is partnering with the Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce and Junior Achievement of Southwest Virginia, Inc. to pilot an innovative Job Shadowing Program for Salem High School students.  This program will provide students with an opportunity to experience what it is like to work in various careers of interest and spend the day with adults who can provide detailed information about the nature of the work, job requirements, and the benefits of their career choice.
Here is how the program will work.  The Chamber will maintain a list of businesses who have volunteered to host students.  Students will access and complete an application for a one-day job shadowing placement online through the Junior Achievement website.  A representative from Junior Achievement will match the student's application with businesses and industries who have volunteered to host students and provide them with contact information.  The student will contact the business/industry representative and schedule their job shadowing opportunity.  At this point, the business/industry representative will have an opportunity to provide the student with any information they may need in order to ensure a successful placement.
In order to make this idea a reality, we need chamber members of every shape and size to enroll as a Job Shadowing Host Site.
All we need from you is the following:

1.      A commitment to host Salem High School students in your business/industry for one-day job shadowing placements.

2.     Designate an individual to serve as a liaison from your office.  (The time commitment is minimal.)

We hope you will support our efforts to improve students' understanding of the variety of careers available in our community and throughout the world by enrolling as a Job Shadowing Host Site.  Please fill out the Job Shadow Host Business Enrollment Form on the next page and email, mail or fax it to the Salem-Roanoke County Chamber office at (540) 387-4110.  Additional information will be sent to your designated contact and an orientation meeting will be scheduled.  If you have any questions, please contact the Chamber at or 540-387-0267.
